Maersk to Hike Rates in Asia-Caribbean Trade

Maersk Line has announced three rates increases for dry shipments:

  • Starting June 15, the carrier will hike rates in its trade between the Far East and the Caribbean:
    • From Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan to Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Colombia and Puerto Rico, the hike will be $980 per 20-foot container and $1,400 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
    • From China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan to Cuba, the increase will be €750 (about US$969) per 20-foot container and $1,395 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
  • Maersk will also increase rates in its trade from the Far East to Central America, effective June 15. From China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan to Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Colombia, the hike will be $750 per 20-foot container and $1,500 per 40-foot container.
  • Additionally, the container line will boost raise rates on its route from the Far East to New Zealand, beginning July 1. From South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to New Zealand, the increase will be $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot high-cube container.

Additionally, in June, Maersk will simplify local surcharges to Australia and modify rates for dry equipment in Mexico and Central America.

The container line will also revise its services between the Far East and South America’s east coast, as part of a joint restructuring with five other carriers, effective in July.

Furthermore, Maersk will implement a slack season program for its ECUMED service, which connects Latin America with the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Middle East and South Asia, during the third quarter of 2013.

Notably, Hapag-Lloyd will also raise rates in its trade from Asia to the Caribbean and Mexico on June 15.
